Best Time for Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake Trekking in 2025 and 2026
Trekking the Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake is most suitable during the spring (March to June ) months. In these months, you can enjoy cool weather with clear mountain views. There are possibilities of the occasional afternoon showers, especially as you approach the monsoon season, but mostly, you will find favorable conditions for trekking. The Khorpa Ridge and Khayer Lake landscape comes to life with wildflowers and rhododendron blossoms, making the journey more enjoyable.
Likewise, autumn (September to December) is another suitable time for trekking to Khayer Lake and Khopra Ridge. You will find clear skies offering clear mountain views. There are fewer chances of rainfall, but it’s best to take precautions during the early autumn months. However, autumn is the peak season in the Annapurna region. Tucked between the Annapurna Base Camp and Jomsom trekking trail, off the beaten trail of Khayer Lake and Khopra Ridge Trek in the Annapurna region has recently gained popularity. Besides the exceptional Himalayan views and absolute landscapes, the trek bestows the warm hospitality of the Gurung and Magar people. This 12-day long Khayer Lake and Khopra Ridge Trek initiates from Kathmandu/Pokhara and drives to Ulleri. We will trek towards Gorepani poonhill (3210 ), a beautiful Pun village located in western Nepal. The trekking trials are accompanied by uplifting views of Annapurna and Machhapuchhre, amazing landscapes, and small ancient villages. As the trek goes further, we will trek towards Khopra ridge, leaving behind the Annapurna Circuit route. After reaching Khopra ridge, we will head towards Khayer Lake (4,500m), which is the highest point of our trek. The trek then heads towards Ghorepani via Swanta village, where you can relish the mountain delights, and our trek ends at Ghandruk Village with the drive back to Pokhara/Kathmandu.

Your trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Along the way, you will travel across winding highway roads, giving you incredible views of the Trishuli River and highway settlements. You can enjoy the lush vegetation, quaint settlements, and the rambling rivers as you drive toward Pokhara.
In Pokhara, unwind at your hotel. You can take some time to explore the vibrant city by Phewa Lake and explore some of the city’s nightlife.
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel in Pokhara. Next, you will head for the bus to Ulleri as you will journey along the Baglung Highway. As you approach Nayapul, you will encounter off-road sections. After a 4-hour bus ride, you will reach Ulleri. From Ulleri, your trek begins to Ghorepani. It takes another 4 hours to reach this charming Gurung and Magar village. Along the way, you can relish the sights of the magnificent Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Dhaulagiri.
Today, you should wake up before dawn to prepare for the Poon Hill hike. The hike is a short 45-minute journey to the iconic destination, Poon Hill View Point. This early morning hike rewards you with an incredible sunrise view.
After spending some time in Poon Hill and taking in the sights of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhure, and Manaslu panorama, you head back to your hotel for breakfast. Now, the trek to Sauta begins. You pass through rhododendron forests, passing by several Poon and Magar settlements.
After a 5-hour trek, you will reach Sauta. Sauta is a farm village surrounded by rhododendron, magnolia, and oak tree forests offering views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South.
Today, you will follow the less-frequented trails leading to Chistibung. The journey takes you through terraced farmlands and local settlements. As you head northward, you will find rhododendron and bamboo forests, followed by a gradual ascent to Chistibung.
Chistibung is a quaint settlement with few huts. You will spend the night in a tea-house.
You will reach one of the highlights of the trek today. Begin the day’s journey early in the morning through steep ascents across alpine bushes. The trail is home to some fascinating wildlife, like the Himalayan Tahr and Danphe– the national bird of Nepal. Keep a keen eye, and capture them on your cameras.
After 4 hours, you will finally reach Khopra Ridge. From the ridge, you can get stunning views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Vara-Shikhar (Annapurna Fang), and Annapurna South. Spend the night in a local teahouse.
After a continuous trek, you get a day off today. You can explore the Khopra Ridge vicinity and get insights into the lifestyle and culture of the locals. Alternatively, if you can still walk extra miles, you can take on the Khayer Lake Hike.
Khayer Lake is a revered pilgrim site for both Hindu and Buddhist devotees. During the July-August full moon, devotees gather in huge numbers to take a holy dip in the holy water for spiritual cleansing.
Take some time to explore the beautiful Khayer Lake and capture the pristine beauty of the surroundings. After spending some time there, you head back to Khopra Ridge for an overnight stay.
It is now time to descend to a lower altitude. You begin the descent to Dobato after breakfast in your teahouse. The hike takes you through high grasslands. During summer, you will find locals herding their cattle in the vast pasturelands. You will then continue through the trails across rhododendron forests and reach Dobato.
From Dobato, you travel to Ghandruk. The trail descends through dense rhododendron and oak forests as you pass villages like Tadhapani. On the way, you will get occasional glimpses of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli before reaching Ghandruk.
Ghandruk is a charming Gurung Village known for its exceptional hospitality. You can also marvel at the amazing mountain views and enjoy the local Gurung culture. Overnight stay in a teahouse in Ghandruk
You are now approaching the end of the trek. As you bid farewell to the mountains, you will walk a short distance to catch a private jeep to Pokhara. This is a 4-hour journey through the Himalayan roads across terraced fields and traditional villages with occasional views of the Annapurna range.
After reaching the highway, the trail takes you on a scenic journey along the Seti River to Pokhara. You can enjoy a relaxing night at your hotel or head out to Lakeside.
The bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu leaves early in the morning. Depending on the traffic, it can take anywhere between 8 to 9 hours to reach Kathmandu.
The journey to Kathmandu is very scenic. You will come across little towns and marketplaces along the way. You will reach Kathmandu by early evening. After checking in at your hotel, you can head to the tourist hub in Thamel to celebrate your accomplishment.
