The 15-day Annapurna Circuit Trek, amalgamated with the high-altitude Tilicho Lake, is one of the best-loved treks of the Annapurnas. The trek takes you into the gorges of the Kali Gandaki (Andha galchi), a record-breaking gorge, and the beautiful sapphire lakes of Tilicho, one of the cryohydroic lakes on Earth.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek is a 15-day journey that combines Nepal's most varied classic trek with a side trip to Tilicho Lake, a turquoise glacial lake at 4,919 meters (16,138 feet) beneath Tilicho Peak. You walk the full high section of the Annapurna Circuit, add the lake that most circuit trekkers only see in photographs, and cross the 5,416-meter Thorong La Pass. Index Adventure runs it as a guided package with special discounts and budget-friendly prices.

This is the circuit for trekkers who want more than the standard route. The Tilicho detour adds three days, two glacial lakes if you count the Ice Lake acclimatization hike, and some of the wildest scenery in the Annapurna region: a high desert valley, a famous landslide-carved trail, and a lake so remote that a Russian team once used it for the highest scuba dive ever recorded. Below you will find the full day-by-day itinerary, the real cost, departure dates, and straight answers about difficulty and safety.

The most preferred seasons for Tilicho Base Camp, along with Annapurna Circuit, are the Autumn season, which generally runs from mid-September to late December. Alternatively, springtime, from March to June, also presents a favourable opportunity.

During these seasons, you will get the perfect atmospheric conditions, unmatchable panoramic views reflected in the turquoise waters of the Tilicho Lakes. Daytime weather is generally average and quite good for trekking, although nights can be cold.

Conversely, winter (January to Late Feb) and summer (July to August or early Sept) come with significant difficulties due to cold, a large amount of snowfall, leeches, persistent rainfall, and even landslides.

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho add-ons can be achievable, but you need to formulate it accordingly, prepare, pack, and follow.

Difficulty and Challenges

The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lakes is moderately complex. That said, without prior trekking experience in the trekking or hiking field can complete this trek. Why To Trek Annapurna Circuit including Tilicho Lake Trek with Index Adventure? Is it the best?

Index Adventure is a licensed Kathmandu trekking company operating from Amrit Marg, Thamel, for over 2 decades. Our guides have led the Tilicho route in every season and know exactly where it demands respect: the landslide section, the pre-dawn pass crossing, and the altitude schedule in between. Registered with the Nepal government and affiliated with TAAN, NTB, KEEP, and NMA, we run this trek with acclimatization built into the itinerary rather than sold as an optional extra.

Two acclimatization aids are structural in this route: the rest day in Manang with an active hike to Ice Lake or the Chongkor viewpoint, and the fact that the Tilicho detour itself works as acclimatization for Thorong La. By the time you reach the pass, you have already been to 4,919 meters and slept three nights above 4,000. Trekkers rate our departures 5.0 out of 5, and our guides carry a first aid kit and pulse oximeter on every trip, checking oxygen levels each evening above Manang.

Essential Information

How Difficult Is the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek?

This is a challenging trek, a clear step up from the standard circuit. Three things make it harder: you spend more days above 4,000 meters (five nights on this itinerary), you make two separate pushes toward 5,000 meters (Tilicho Lake, then Thorong La), and you cross the landslide section, which demands focus rather than fitness. No technical climbing skills are needed, and there are no ropes or crampons in normal season conditions, but you need solid fitness: to be comfortable walking five to eight hours a day on rough ground, day after day.

The hardest day is the Thorong La crossing, seven to eight hours with a pre-dawn start at extreme altitude. The second hardest is the Tilicho Lake day, with its 800-meter dawn climb and long return. The compensation is real: because the Tilicho detour forces gradual altitude gain, trekkers on this route typically handle the pass better than those on the standard circuit. The detour is not just scenery; it is acclimatization you can see on the oximeter.

Fit first-timers complete this trek every season with proper preparation. If you are unsure where you stand, read how difficult the Annapurna Circuit is as a baseline, then whether beginners can do the Annapurna Circuit, and follow the training plan in how to prepare for the Annapurna Circuit Trek. For this route, add hill training with a loaded pack in the final two months.

The Landslide Section: What It Is and How We Manage It

Between Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp, the trail crosses a long band of steep, unstable scree, and it has a reputation. The path is narrow, the slope above sheds stones, and in wind or after rain the surface moves underfoot. Most companies do not mention it. We would rather you know.

Here is how it is managed in practice. We cross early in the day, when the slope is coldest and most stable and before the afternoon wind rises. The group stays spaced out so no one walks directly below another trekker. Trekking poles stay in hand, helmets are not standard practice on this trail, but eyes stay up, and the guide sets a steady pace with no stopping in the exposed sections. Crossed this way, thousands of trekkers walk it safely every season. It deserves respect, not fear, and it is precisely why this route should be walked with a guide who knows the ground.

Is the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Safe? The Honest Answer

Yes, with the same caveat as every high Himalayan trek: altitude is the real risk, and it is managed by pacing, not luck. This itinerary holds to the climb high, sleep low rule, never pushing sleeping altitude recklessly, with the Manang rest day and the Tilicho detour doing double duty as acclimatization. Guides check oxygen saturation nightly above Manang, know the symptoms of AMS, HAPE, and HACE, and hold one unbreakable rule: worsening symptoms mean descent, and nobody crosses the pass sick.

Deaths on the Annapurna Circuit are rare relative to the tens of thousands who walk it each year, and most incidents trace back to the same causes: ascending too fast, ignoring symptoms, trekking alone, or crossing the pass in a storm. The 2014 Thorong La blizzard, the worst disaster in the trek's history, hit trekkers who were caught in an exceptional October storm, and it is the reason weather calls are now taken far more seriously. We do not cross the pass in bad weather, full stop, and the itinerary carries enough flexibility to wait a day. For the full, honest picture, read our analysis of how many people have died on the Annapurna Circuit and the guide to altitude sickness on the Annapurna Circuit. Comprehensive travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation above 5,416 meters is mandatory on this trek.

Best Time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

Autumn (late September to November) and spring (March to May) are the two windows that work. Autumn brings the year's clearest skies and the sharpest lake color; October is the prime month, with stable weather, dry trails, and the Dashain and Tihar festivals adding life to the villages. Spring is warmer lower down, with rhododendrons flooding the forests below Chame, though afternoon cloud builds earlier over the lake by May.

Winter is a genuine problem on this route, more than on the standard circuit: snow closes the trail to the lake and makes the landslide section dangerous, and Thorong La can shut for days. Monsoon brings rain and poor visibility to the approach valleys, though the upper Manang valley sits in the rain shadow. If your dates fall outside the two main seasons, talk to us before booking, and read the month-by-month detail in the best time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek and the full weather and temperature guide.

Two Lakes, One Trek: Ice Lake and Tilicho Lake

A quiet advantage of this itinerary that few operators point out: you visit two high glacial lakes, not one. The Ice Lake (Kicho Tal) hike on your Manang acclimatization day takes you to 4,600 meters above the Marsyangdi valley, with a panorama across the entire Annapurna wall, and it is a serious, beautiful hike in its own right. Three days later you stand at Tilicho. The two experiences are different in character, Ice Lake open and panoramic, Tilicho enclosed and cathedral-like, and doing both in one trek is something even the 20-day full circuit rarely includes. For everything about the lake itself, its geology, legends, seasonal color, and route detail, our complete Tilicho Lake guide goes deeper than this page can.

Shorter and Alternative Versions: 10-Day, 7-Day, and 5-Day Options

Not everyone has 15 days, and the route can be compressed or cut in honest ways and dishonest ones. Here is the honest version.

A 10-day Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake is possible by driving deeper into the valley (to Chame) and trimming Pokhara, but it removes margin from the acclimatization schedule, so we only recommend it for trekkers with recent high-altitude experience. A 7-day or 5-day Tilicho Lake trek drops the Thorong La crossing entirely: drive to Manang side, walk to the lake and back out the same valley. It delivers the lake on a short clock but gives up the pass, Muktinath, and the crossing into Mustang. If the lake is the dream, the short version gives it to you. If the journey is the dream, the full 15 days is worth every day. We build any of these as private departures; tell us your dates and fitness and we will tell you honestly which fits.

You can also extend rather than shrink: the Annapurna Circuit with Nar Phu Valley adds the restricted, medieval Nar Phu valley to the circuit, the Classic Annapurna Circuit Trek walks the traditional longer line with Poon Hill, and the Manaslu with Annapurna Circuit Trek joins two great circuits into one expedition. If you are deciding between this route and the standard version, the Annapurna Circuit Trek page covers the 12-day classic without the lake.

Permits for the Trek

One permit is required and enforced: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals, NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals, free for children under 10. It is checked at multiple points on this route, including Besisahar, Chame, Manang, and the Jomsom area. The TIMS card is no longer enforced on Annapurna trails under the rules in place since 2023; checkpoints verify ACAP only. What is enforced is the guide requirement: solo trekking without a licensed guide or registered agency is not permitted in the Annapurna region, and on this particular route, with its landslide section and remote lake valley, that rule is simply good sense. Your ACAP is arranged and included when you book with us. Details and documents are in the Annapurna Circuit permit guide.

Accommodation and Food on the Trek

Teahouses host you the whole way, and this route includes the full range: comfortable lodges with bakeries and hot showers in Manang, and genuinely basic rooms at Shree Kharka and Tilicho Base Camp, where beds are simple, bathrooms are shared, and the dining room stove is the social center of the evening. A four-season sleeping bag matters most on the three high nights of the Tilicho section and at Thorong Phedi.

Food follows the same curve. Menus in the lower valley and Manang are long: dal bhat, momos, noodles, pasta, apple pie. At Base Camp the kitchen is simpler and prices are higher, because every gas bottle and sack of rice arrived by mule. Dal bhat remains the smart order everywhere, fresh, unlimited, and cooked constantly. Eat more than you think you need at altitude, drink three to four liters a day, and treat your water rather than buying plastic bottles that have no way off the mountain. The full trail menu reality is in food and drinks during the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Connectivity on the Tilicho Route

Expect less than on the main circuit. Mobile signal (Ncell and NTC) is workable to Manang, then fades; the Tilicho valley is largely off-grid, and you lose signal entirely in the landslide zone and at the lake. Teahouse WiFi exists at Manang and patchily beyond, for a fee, and charging costs rise with altitude. Treat days 7 to 12 as offline: download maps in advance, carry a power bank, and tell people at home not to expect messages until Muktinath. The full picture is in the guide to WiFi, mobile network, and electricity on the Annapurna Circuit.

Packing List for the Tilicho Lake Route

Pack for the standard circuit, then add cold-weather margin for the three Tilicho nights and the dawn lake climb.

  • Layers: wicking base layers, fleece or light down mid-layer, and a windproof, waterproof shell. The dawn hike to the lake is bitterly cold until the sun clears the ridge.
  • Insulation: a serious down jacket and a four-season sleeping bag (we provide one if needed). Base Camp nights drop well below freezing even in October.
  • Footwear: broken-in waterproof boots with firm ankle support for the scree, plus camp shoes.
  • Hands and head: insulated gloves plus liner gloves, warm hat, sun hat, and category 3 or 4 sunglasses; the glare off the lake basin is fierce.
  • Trail gear: trekking poles (non-negotiable for the landslide section and the descent from the pass), headlamp with spare batteries, two-liter water capacity plus purification.
  • Health: personal first aid, blister kit, sunscreen, lip balm, and any personal medication; discuss altitude medication with your doctor before travel.
  • Documents and cash: passport, insurance details, passport photos, and enough Nepali rupees for the whole trail.

The complete checklist, item by item, is in the Annapurna Circuit Trek packing list, and our gear-provided list covers what Index Adventure supplies so you do not buy twice.
