After resting for a bit and having our breakfast, a 6 hours drive takes us to Ghami Village. We visit a few Buddhist stupas, cross the Kaligandaki River, and reach Ghami village to spend the night.
Kagbeni marks the final checkpoint before entering the restricted high altitude desert. The 4WD drive follows a rugged track past Chhusang (2,980m) and Chele (3,100m). Ascending Taklam La Pass (3,624m) provides passengers with sweeping views of Damodar Danda, Yakawa Kang, and Tilicho Peak. The descent into Samar offers striking vistas of Mount Nilgiri straight from the vehicle.
Continuing through juniper woodlands toward Syanbochen, the route passes near the sacred Ramchung (Chungsi) Cave (only visited when we are trekking), an 8th-century meditation site for Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava).
Driving further north brings us to Ghami (3,520m), home to the longest mani wall (half a kilometer) in Nepal. Nearby, the dramatic red cliffs of Dhakmar (3,820m) feature ancient honeycombed cave dwellings.
A short vehicle stop at Tsarang (3,560m) highlights a 16th century monastery perched on a gorge edge. Tsarang also serves as the geographical junction branching eastward toward the sacred Damodar Kunda pilgrimage lakes.
The drive peaks at Lo La Pass (4,000m) where the walled city of Lo Manthang Upper Mustang, Nepal first appears. Upon reaching the capital, we check into our guesthouse to rest and refresh.
Later in the afternoon, we take a short drive further north to the multi-story Chhoser sky caves Upper Mustang. Here, we explore the spectacular five-story Jhong Cave with its 40 interconnected rooms and the Garphu (Nyiphuk) cave monastery, before returning to our hotel in Lo Manthang for the night.
We dedicate the morning to a 2 to 3-hour exploration of Lo Manthang, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Founded in the 13th century by the warrior Ame Pal, this medieval walled city is a living museum of Tibetan culture. We spend time discovering the royal palaces, intricate Buddhist arts, and the fascinating daily routines of the local people within the fortified valley.
Following the morning exploration, we drive south toward the renowned Lo Gekhar Gompa (Ghar Gompa), where we will stop for lunch.

Located in the high plateau of Upper Mustang, Lo Gekhar Gompa is believed to be one of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayan world. Built in the 8th century by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), it actually predates the famous Samye Monastery of Tibet, which was completed just after.
Optional Afternoon Hike (Mui La Pass to Dhakmar and Ghami):
After lunch, you have the option to leave the vehicle and embark on a scenic high-altitude hike. The trail ascends the Mui La Pass (4,170 m), offering expansive views of Mustang's bare, desert-like hills.
From the pass, the route descends toward Dhakmar, a village stunningly situated against dramatic, blood-red cliffs honeycombed with ancient caves. From Dhakmar, it is an easy 15 to 20-minute hike to reach the picturesque farming settlement of Ghami, where we will reunite with the vehicle and settle into our guesthouse for the night.
The drive retraces south through Upper Mustang's ancient villages, descending back through the Kali Gandaki valley to Kagbeni. From Kagbeni, the route climbs northeast passing through the medieval village of Jharkot, crossing notable places like Dhakmar, Ghami, Ghiling, Syanboche, Chhusang, Kagbeni before reaching Ranipauwa, the last motor point. From here, a short uphill walk leads to Muktinath (3,800m).
